Long-term study led by University of Michigan suggests need for further study to define optimal amount of iron in infant formula.
“The high prevalence of iron deficiency in infancy has led to routine iron fortification of infant formula and foods in many countries,” says lead study author Betsy Lozoff, M.D., a behavioral pediatrician at the University of Michigan Health System and research professor at the University of Michigan Center for Human Growth and Development.

A Quest for Environmental Justice
More than 30 years ago, Jerome Nriagu’s career shifted course when he discovered that low-income children in urban areas were suffering disproportionately from lead poisoning. While industry leaders tended to blame the victims, Nriagu saw that the real cause of the problem was poor housing and the indiscriminate use of lead paint. “This got me really interested in environmental injustice and disproportionate exposure,” says the Nigerian-born professor of environmental health sciences.
