Prior to arriving in Michigan in Fall 2006, Dr. Miller was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry (Division of Child and Family Psychiatry) at Brown Medical School. Dr. Miller's research interests cover emotion processing, school readiness, early childhood mental health, observational research methods, and prevention science. To that end, she also conducts evaluation work assessing child and family outcomes in prevention and intervention studies. Dr. Miller is currently the PI of an NIMH grant to study emotional competence during the transition to kindergarten among children living in poverty. She is Co-PI of a related study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This work is focused on understanding connections between different aspects of emotion processing (specifically the expression, biobehavioral regulation, and understanding of emotions) and adaptive child outcomes (e.g., social competence, school achievement, mental health). Dr. Miller has also been funded by the Administration on Children and Families and the Head Start Bureau to study the effect of program evaluation practices on child outcomes in Head Start. Dr. Miller collaborates with the Michigan Prevention Research Center, housed in Public Health, and the the Pathways to Literacy Project, housed in Psychology.
