John Schulenberg
John Schulenberg, Ph.D.
Research Professor, CHGD;
Research Professor and Associate Director, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research; Professor of Developmental Psychology, Department of Psychology

The ongoing research program of John Schulenberg focuses on psychosocial development and psychopathology during adolescence and young adulthood, with specific emphasis on the link between developmental transitions and health and well-being, on alcohol and other drug use, on developmental intervention and prevention research, and on the conceptualization and analysis of change. Using nationally representative, multiwave, longitudinal samples topics of interest are the increase in health risks during adolescence, the description and explanation of trajectories of substance use during adolescence and young adulthood, discontinuities in functioning and adjustment during the transition to young adulthood, the comorbidity of substance use and psychopathology during adolescence and adulthood, and the combination of variable-centered and pattern-centered approaches to maximize understanding of developmental change.

In 2004, Schulenberg was honored with the Lansdowne Lectureship, University of Victoria, Victoria Canada (sponsored by their Centre of Addictions and Department of Psychology); he currently chairs the NIH Psychosocial Development, Risk and Prevention (PDRP) Study Section, and is Program Co-Chair of the 2008 Society for Research on Adolescence Biennial Conference.
