MENTAL HEALTH CONCEPTS IN CULTURAL CONTEXT

Sherry Olson and Margaret Evans are planning a new research project on indigenous concepts of child psychopathology. In association with colleagues from the Department of Sociology and Duke University, they will study how parents and children from cultures around the world (with a focus on East Asia) conceptualize child behaviors that, from a Western perspective, might be considered evidence of psychopathology. Such research would shed light on universal features of mental health and pathology as well as culture-specific concepts.
